Excellence Is the Standard, Pride Is the Reward.
“Excellence is the standard, pride is the reward.”
That was more than a theme.
It was a declaration.
When a College decides that excellence will be seen, named, and celebrated out loud, it is felt throughout the campus. Not quietly. Not in passing. Not as an afterthought. But in a way that reestablishes the work, the discipline, and the standard of what it means to be a COBE Scholar.
The Deese Honors Gala was created to do exactly that.
To recognize students who are not just participating, but leading.
Not just learning, but applying.
Not just present, but making impact.
There is something powerful about pausing long enough to honor the students who are doing the work when no one is watching, carrying the standard when it would be easier to do less, and representing the Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics with excellence in classrooms, organizations, internships, entrepreneurial spaces, digital platforms, and community settings.
Excellence deserves a stage.
Not because recognition is the goal, but because recognition reminds students that their work matters. Their discipline matters. Their growth matters. Their impact matters.
At the Deese Honors Gala, we honored excellence across nine areas:
Outstanding Leadership
Entrepreneurial Innovator of the Year
Community Impact in Business
Rising Star
Excellence in Digital Education
Deese Legacy
Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence
University Award for Academic Excellence
Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence
Each award represented a different expression of what it means to matriculate through the halls of the Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics.
Leadership.
Innovation.
Discipline.
Impact.
Legacy.
Academic excellence at the highest level.
These were not just categories. They were reflections of the kind of student we are developing and the kind of standard we are building. A standard rooted in preparation, professionalism, purpose, and pride.
The COBE Scholar is not defined only by GPA, résumé lines, or campus involvement. The COBE Scholar is defined by how they show up, how they lead, how they serve, how they think, and how they use their education to create value beyond themselves.
That is why moments like this matter.
Because students need to see that excellence is not invisible.
They need to know that leadership is noticed.
They need to understand that innovation is celebrated.
They need to feel that their College is proud of them, not just at graduation, but throughout the journey.
The Deese Honors Gala was a reminder that when we create spaces to celebrate excellence, we do more than hand out awards. We shape culture.
We tell students what we value.
We reinforce the standard.
We call them higher.
And we remind them that they belong to a legacy that expects more because it believes they are capable of more.
Excellence is the standard.
Pride is the reward.
And for the Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics, that standard is alive, visible, and rising.
